MIDDLEBORO — The winter term of “Yoga For (Your Whole) Life” will run during February and March at the Leonard E. Simmons Multi-service Center (Middleboro Council on Aging), 558 Plymouth St., on Thursday afternoons from 3:15 to 4:15. The first class, to be held Feb. 2, is free and the subsequent eight classes can be purchased for $32 as a set, or $5 per class on a drop-in basis.
Yoga at the COA is gently geared for stretching and relaxation, using chairs rather than mats, and is ideally suited for older adults or people with minor disabilities. All classes at the COA are open to all ages. Instructor Nancy Brady Cunningham brings 40 years of experience to this special Hatha Yoga class, with a focus on balance, endurance, breathing, and good posture – the important things that make people graceful, flexible, and active.
There are many types of Yoga practice: Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Iyengar, Kundalini, Bikram, to name a few. Hatha Yoga is a general term that encompasses many of the physical types, with an emphasis on gentle stretching and relaxation. Nancy Cunningham took her first Hatha Yoga class through Norton Adult Education around 1970, and found it to be an ideal fit to counterbalance the stresses of juggling responsibilities and caring for her children and her siblings.
For Ms. Cunningham, it was a revelation that “It’s OK to relax! It’s OK to take a deep breath! It’s OK to stretch!” This is the gift she brings into her Yoga classes.
All are invited to give Yoga at the COA a free try on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 3:15.
